Exploring 3 types of team building for companies

The corporate world is marching to the beat of a different drum with businesses incorporating remote and hybrid workforces in addition to full-time office-based employees. With a varied workplace dynamic, it is often a challenge to align schedules to dedicate time to building rapport and in-person collaboration.

Where customer meetings once were the primary driver for business travel, there is now an increased importance of internal meetings, events or conferences to provide dedicated time for departments or cross-functional teams and even entire businesses to come together to connect. This is often where team building activities can play an important role in fostering relationships and also enhancing skills, morale, communication, creativity, innovation and productivity.

Team building is not all about playing games; there is a strategic side to these exercises and the results will largely depend on what the company would like employees to learn and gain from participating.

In this blog, we will look at three types of team building that companies can incorporate into their next conference, event or meeting.

1. Problem solving challenges

No matter the business we work in, we invariably encounter challenges in team dynamics. With different personality types and work ethics, disagreements or frustrations may arise. Introducing problem solving challenges and activities into your next corporate gathering can aid in improving communication and interpersonal relationships; after all, each team member will bring a different understanding and level of problem solving to each challenge. Each person’s perspectives may not be the same and it is only when the team works together to solve a common problem that the whole challenge can be fully understood.

As the saying goes, “Two heads are better than one” and much can be said with team problem solving as it often generates more than one solution, which can lead to better productivity back in the workplace. Brainstorming and sharing ideas can also lead to greater creativity between the team and outside-of-the-box solutions.

An example of a problem solving challenge is a city scavenger hunt where teams collect a list of specific items or complete a series of tasks within a designated area. The items or tasks are typically hidden or scattered throughout the location, and participants use clues or instructions to guide them to each point. The goal of a scavenger hunt is to encourage problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, and friendly competition while adding an element of excitement of exploring a new city.

2. Corporate social responsibility team building

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) team building combines efforts to strengthen team bonds with a focus on contributing to social or environmental causes that align with their personal and professional values. It involves engaging employees in activities that not only promote teamwork, communication and collaboration, but also have a positive impact on the community or the environment. This approach aligns with the broader concept of CSR, where businesses aim to make a positive contribution to society beyond their core operations. Further, employees have a sense of pride in giving back to communities, seeing how their efforts can make a difference.

An example of this might be teams embarking on impactful journeys to areas affected by disasters, aiming to contribute meaningfully to the community’s recovery. These team-building initiatives involve engaging employees in hands-on projects that assist in rebuilding and revitalizing the affected areas. Another example might be volunteering for a local charity to support an initiative, such as packing hampers or helping cook meals for those in need. Tasks that require coordination, communication, and problem-solving not only contribute to the project’s success but also enhance the team’s ability to work cohesively.

3. Activity team building

Activity team building can take place indoors or outdoors and encourages employees to collaborate, strategize and overcome challenges as a team. By participating, team members develop a great understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses and build trust, along with promoting a sense of accomplishment as teams work towards common goals, contributing to a positive and collaborative workplace culture.

An example of activity team building could be participating in unique cultural activities, and creating shared experiences that bring team members closer together. Embracing local customs and traditions helps employees gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the culture of the destination. The exposure can lead to enhanced cultural sensitivity, which is an essential skill in today’s diverse workplace. The shared goal of reaching the finish line quickly creates a strong sense of collective motivation.
